As the camp season approaches, camp leaders are preparing to welcome campers for another summer.

But this summer is different. 2020 has highlighted the blind spots many camps hold in regards to:

• diversity

• equity

• inclusion

• social justice.

Many programs have had to discuss what it looks like for their camps to provide a safe space for BIPOC campers and their various intersecting identities. We must prioritize both the physical and psychological safety of all our campers.

Although many of the issues we need to address are historically rooted and will take years to unlearn and dismantle, there are some steps we can take as camp leaders to provide a safer space for campers, particularly those who hold marginalized identities.
